[COF-300] Preparation of COF/PDMS mixed matrix membranes for efficient ethanol recovery via pervaporation
Summary:
The authors from Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology and Xi'an Jiaotong University developed COF-300/PDMS mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with enhanced hydrophobicity and ethanol affinity, achieving high efficiency in ethanol recovery via pervaporation.

Background:
1. To address the challenges of low separation efficiency and high energy consumption in ethanol recovery from aqueous solutions, previous researchers explored various pervaporation membranes, achieving some success. However, limitations remain in terms of separation factor and total flux.
2. The authors proposed an innovative method of incorporating COF-300 into PDMS to form MMMs, resulting in significant improvements in hydrophobicity, ethanol affinity, and overall pervaporation performance.

Research Content:
1. Synthesis:
The authors synthesized COF-300 using a solvothermal method and prepared COF-300/PDMS MMMs by solution blending and casting.
2. Characterizations:
1) BET results showed specific surface areas of 715 m²/g for COF-300 and significant increases in surface roughness for MMMs with increasing COF-300 loading.
2) SEM images revealed uniform dispersion of COF-300 particles in PDMS, with particle sizes of approximately 10.5 μm.
3) FTIR spectra confirmed the successful incorporation of COF-300 into PDMS.
3. Application:
The COF-300/PDMS MMMs demonstrated excellent performance in ethanol recovery, with a total flux of 1515.28 g·m⁻²·h⁻¹ and a separation factor of 8.7 at 3 wt% COF-300 loading.
4. Mechanism:
The analysis of experimental results indicated that the porous structure of COF-300 provided ultrafast channels for ethanol molecules, enhancing diffusion and membrane swelling, thereby improving separation efficiency.

Outlook:
This research highlights the potential of COF-300 as an ideal filler material for enhancing the performance of pervaporation membranes, offering significant improvements in ethanol recovery efficiency and long-term stability.
